This is a detail from a picture displayed in the Museé, part of a series Grünewald painted depicting the Nativity of Jesus. Mother and child are in a garden setting and in the background is a door containing a cross motif – a glimpse of the future awaiting the babe in arms.

This contemporary painting by the artist, who lives and works in Aberdeen, Scotland, is explained in his own words:

The elements in a play between light and darkness as Ireland seeks the path to peace.

Several hundred miles north of Perth in Western Australia is an area known as the Pinnacles. Here, the land has eroded downwards, leaving standing some four thousand upright limestone formations, resisting the erosion. Reaching up to fifteen feet or more in height, each standing rock is a sculpture in its own right. The distinctive one in the foreground of the photograph, pointing upwards, is bathed in a golden light and is offered as an Easter picture to the readers. Jenny Hill, an Englishwoman, has lived some fifteen years in the Perth area. She is an artist and storyteller. Whilst standing amongst the Pinnacles she described the experience: Soaring Clouds… Wind pouring over naked earth… Ancient muscle of rock In vibrant pulse… Standing Upright…

Painted in oils on a gesso panel (chalk and rabbit skin glue in 8 to 10 layers, on wood): pigments ground by hand in walnut oil and resin. This picture is a reminder that the raison d'être of John the Baptist was the coming of Christ – the birth of a new spirit into the world of matter, our Earth. Yet it is not an ordinary copy, but one that was arrived at through an alchemical journey. David Cranswick, who works in London and Wales, prepared the canvas and paint pigments in special ways, though a renewal in modern times of old practices and recipes. By going along this path, a new consciousness can be gained following the processes that lift matter (pigments) into a spiritual dimension through art. When we re-experience old forms and give them new life, they themselves become transformed and transforming.

Veronica Murray is an artist and nurse living in England. She took this photograph whilst travelling in Austria early in June. One afternoon she was following a line of mountain waterfalls, climbing higher, until she was struck by the elemental power of water, light and earth surrounding her in the sunlight. Unexpected insights… the central form, touched by the rainbow's light, seems somehow humanly close.

Runner-up in the BG Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2001 competition. Taken at sunrise when the new-born rays of the sun touched the frosted window-pane, revealing its delicate forms, soon to be melted by its warmth. Like angel wings, blue-lit by golden sun.

Whilst on holiday in Spain, some five years before, Heather Thomas, a retired schoolteacher, saw the sun rising over a beach, silhouetting the shower unit into an ancient cross-like structure. This moment became an Easter imagination.

Britain, particularly England, was swept by Foot and Mouth disease. The widespread misery that was caused by the government's handling of this gave rise to an issue of the magazine with a strong Foot and mouth theme. The artist David Newbatt, responded to a request to create a colourful work of art for the front cover, to encapsulate time of year (midsummer) and the mood surrounding this crisis.

This German artist was one of the interpreters of the so-called Romantic period. His paintings of nature often had a mystical quality to them and could repay contemplation by revealing new insights to the observer. This picture has something of an Autumnal quality and yet there seems to be life burgeoning, just beneath the surface. The ravine, strewn with obstacles leading to the high, pointing rocks in the background, is a challenging composition - but just look at the quality of the light in the picture, co-mingling a sense of adventure, almost otherworldliness, and inviting the observer to push forward into new realms.

This picture, of watercolour and chalk pastel, was painted by an American artist who claims to be able to directly experience and converse with the angelic world. She tells that whilst she was in a state of communion with this realm this painting was created and hangs today in a place of healing in the U.S.A., seen by many people, some of whom feel particularly helped by it.

The Dome of the Rock, Arabic Qubbat al-Ṣakhrah, shrine in Jerusalem built by the Umayyad caliph ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān in the late 7th century ce. It is the oldest extant Islamic monument. The rock over which the shrine was built is sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

This imposing life-and-a-half-size bronze sculpture of an armoured knight sitting astride his magnificent horse can be viewed in Cutlers Gardens, London. The horse is clad in a caparison decorated with 126 Pictish bird shapes each clasping a blue lead crystal roundel in its tail. The sculpture is mounted on a turntable that revolves one degree every day and will complete an entire revolution during the course of the year.

Lake Tekapo is the second-largest of three roughly parallel lakes running north–south along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin in the South Island of New Zealand (the others are Lake Pukaki and Lake Ohau). It covers an area of 32 sq. mi, and is at an altitude of 2,300 ft above sea level. The lake is fed at its northern end by the braided Godley River, which has its source in the Southern Alps to the north.

A stoup is a basin for holy water, especially on the wall near the door of a Roman Catholic church, for worshippers to dip their fingers in before crossing themselves.

Inspired by the story of the Irish-Celtic God of the earth, the Dagda (the good god), the ruler over life and death. The story tells how he thrust his hands into the ‘cauldron of plenty’ to receive a gift for the earth. This gift was ‘green fire’ which he drew forth and whose greenness he scattered everywhere, as a sower would scatter seeds.

The Temple Church is a late 12th-century church in the City of London located between Fleet Street and the River Thames. Among the oldest and most beautiful churches in London, it was built by the Knights Templar, an order of crusading monks founded in 1118 to protect pilgrims to the Holy Land. The Temple was their headquarters in England: here were the Church, two Halls, cloisters and domestic buildings, leading in the 12th century straight down to the River Thames. The Round Church was consecrated in 1185. It was modelled on the circular Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the most sacred place of the Holy Land and so of the whole world. To be in the Round was to be reminded of Christ’s burial, of our baptism into his death – and so of our resurrection to his new life.

The Pleiades, also known as Messier 45, M45 or the Seven Sisters, is a star cluster located in the constellation of Taurus. It is among the nearest star clusters to Earth and is the cluster most obvious to the naked eye in the night sky.

Gawan is the friend of Parzifal in the poem Parzival by Wolfram von Eschenbach.

A late afternoon shower resulted in a gold-filled rainbow, looking south from Hampstead Heath, London.

In Andahuaylillas in the province of Quispicanchi, the Q'ewar Social Project is bringing social renewal to a village community, who are making ‘Waldorf’ dolls out of locally sourced natural materials and dyes.

Serge noticed this delicate flower during a walk along a lane in Hérault, southern France. He knew it to be a subspecies of the wild tulip Tulipa sylvestris, distinguished by the scarlet tint on the back of the petals. This picture was finished in gold leaf & gold powder from Japan. Never before has a circle been divided into seven equal spaces using a pentagram as its base. The diameters of the two main circles and the distance between their centers derive from the Chestahedron. This geometry has produced a new star, yielding twelve stars circulating in a lemniscate focusing on the ‘center’ and ‘periphery’. The new star is the one that is simultaneously moving within both circles in balance between the centric and the peripheral forces. Thus, where this star is created in conjunction with both circles there are really two stars in the same space (one from the centric side, one from the peripheral side). It therefore appears that there are only eleven stars, while in actuality there are twelve.

Highly Commended, ‘In Praise of Plants’ category, Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2010 competition: owned by the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine. A treasured symbol of the American Southwest, the saguaro cactus occurs only in southern Arizona, northern Mexico and a small area of California. It’s the world’s largest cactus, and yet it is incredibly slow growing, with a lifespan of 150 years or more. During its life, it provides nectar and fruits, as well as homes, for numerous desert animals, including woodpeckers and owls. Chris set out to capture the grandeur of this individual, growing in the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona, and “convey the feeling of awe I felt while walking among such giants.” To achieve the star-studded background, he used a high ISO to keep the stars from blurring and created the halo by positioning the rising moon behind one of the saguaro’s arms. Nikon D700 + 14-24mm f2.8 lens; 30 sec at f2.8; ISO 3200; Gitzo GT3540LS tripod + Kirk ballhead.

This free hanging metal sculpture was displayed in the ‘Sculpture on the Gulf’ event held on Waiheke Island, New Zealand, 2011. Virginia King describes her work: “The graduated hole sizes create an optical illusion, while the spiky edge of the form alludes to marine life forms, cell structures and industrial apparatus.”

The Ark portrays a refuge, a safe place of protection for seeds which are under threat from many quarters.

Part of the Mountain range Khandadhara, in Sundargarh district, north Orissa, India, the waterfall is the abode of a tribal deity known as Maa Kanteshwari. The Pauri Bhuiya are the local tribe and many tribal members have been forcibly removed from the amazingly biodiverse forest in the range, which they have sustained over centuries, to make way for mining activities in the region. The Posco steel company of South Korea, and other steel companies, are trying to get government clearance to extensively mine the mountain range for iron and manganese ore. Mining activities above the waterfall by the Kalinga Commercial Corporation (KCC) have already expanded rapidly, threatening to dry it up.

The inspiration for the picture was the dying of ash trees across Europe, which has now reached up to Scotland, where I live. At Christmas, when my boys were young, I used to tell them a story about a woodcutter who lived in a forest where grew a mighty oak tree, the King of the Forest. Its trunk divided into two great branches and in between them grew a little Christmas tree. Every Christmas the woodcutter, who lived alone in the depths of the forest, would care for this little Christmas tree, dress it with candles and celebrate Christmas. And so I took this as an inspiration in relation to the ash tree. The theme is that out of death can come life. The Christmas tree, with the lit candles, is a celebration of the birth of life within the depth of winter, the time when everything is asleep and where the landscape can look barren and dead. Even when all looks lost, there is hope and if one really opens one’s eyes and is perceptive, you can see signs of new beginnings.

This picture was inspired by the midsummer mood of St John the Baptist with its theme of renewal, change, letting go of that which has served its purpose to allow that which is new to appear. The choice to do that was also depicted in the Hans Holbein painting in the Scottish National Gallery: ‘An Allegory of the Old and New Testaments’ that informs this cover picture. Metanoia is from the Greek μετάνοια meaning to change one’s thinking.

The large-flowered evening primroses Oenothera glazioviana, in this photograph have been blooming all Summer long and through to Michaelmas. If you stand in early evening and watch the plant closely you will see the flowers actually opening before your eyes – a mysterious and awe inspiring experience. First the long red sepals curl backwards and within minutes the bright yellow petals unfurl themselves into full blossoms. It makes you wonder what amazing forces are working through this plant? The elemental world is very much neglected by people today; indeed its existence goes mostly unacknowledged, as do the beings who attend to the life processes in nature. Older cultures had a relationship to the underlying rhythms and forces that inform nature which modern people have lost contact with. This picture of the gnome, a representative of these realms, will, it is to be hoped, stir a remembering.

“I was fascinated by the way the water being forced between these two heaps of basalt columns kept rising and falling with such elemental power.”

New Zealand enjoys an abundance of natural water sources; other parts of the world are not so fortunate. In the future, if we do not encourage a deeper understanding and love for each other and the world we live in, wars will be fought over water.

The picture was painted in 2008 by Abraham Madey when studying at the Hawthorne Valley Alkion Center (New York State) from where he graduated as a teacher going on to teach Math and Physics at the Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School (where he was also once a pupil). He has been painting with water colours for some 20 years and described the picture as: “a remembrance of the time I spent working at sea under the billowing sails of a square rigged ship then called the HMS Rose (though it is not a picture of the Rose per se). If asked what the impulse behind the image was, I would say it was to express the tensions between water, wind and light that arose around the ship in the image.”

On Thursday 23rd June 2016 Britain voted in a referendum to leave the European Union. The grail image of the sun, moon and stars perhaps might have been the flag of Europe. Perhaps it still might be.
